My experience in New Zealand as an exchange student

Natalia Barreto

Everything started when I entered Carry on Learning English Institute in Duitama ( a partner of the agency Mundo Destinos), where I received most of the support and help for my future experience in New Zealand.
I was prepared by my teachers, and motivated by the staff to face my experience. Also, they provided me all the information I needed and helped me with everything I had to do before leaving Colombia. I´m always thankful to all of them for supplying knowledge about the English language because of the fact of having a good English base is one of the most important items to have, to be able to cope with everything I had to front up to at the beginning of my stay.
As well, I got lots of help from Mundo Destinos, the educational travel agency I went through. Beyond facilitating the process to get me to New Zealand , Mundo Destinos Duitama have  been willing to help me and take care of me during my whole exchange time.
Words can´t explain how my experience in New Zealand has been. It´s incredible how a country which includes people, culture, language, challenges and a completely new life style could change me in so many ways.
To come to New Zealand was one of the best decisions I’ve ever taken, it goes beyond an exchange year. It gave me the chance to learn more than whatever I had ever expected, from the English language, to knowing myself living in a new culture. Besides making heaps of kiwi friends and also friends from around the entire world, trying new things, having awesome experiences, traveling around as much I could ever imagine, and the privilege of living with a warm and amazing kiwi family which I regard it if they were my real family.
New Zealand is the country I fell in love with, it´s a wonderful and peaceful country to live in, where I met the nicest people of the world, where I saw the most beautiful landscapes, where the people are completely crazy (in a good way), where I learnt more than whatever I had ever expected, where even though we make mistakes everything is always alright, where I built a life, where I overcame my fears and grew up some more, where I learnt what to be 18000km away from home looks like, where I had as much fun as a human being could ever have. I actually have no regrets.

The kindness of the people always made me feel welcome so I always felt as if I was at home.
I went to Thames High School as a year 13 student. Thames high is such a good place to learn, make friends and have so much fun. I had the chance to be part of many activities and to join in heaps of stuff the school got.  There is a wide curriculum to choose from. Subjects such as outdoor education made me able to try extreme sports and go on camps and overnight trips.
From the beginning I knew I was going on an adventure, which although it was an amazing chance for me, it was something not easy to handle.  And I was right. Every single struggle made me stronger and realize how much I’m able to do.
I can surely say that having come to New Zealand is the best experience of my life so far. If I had the chance to come back and do exactly the same as what I’ve done, I wouldn´t  think twice about it. Part of my heart belongs to New Zealand.
